Molasses Milk Recipe

My son would drink a gallon of chocolate milk a day if I let him.  This recipe came about through my search for a healthier alternative to commercial flavored milks and was an instant hit.   Luke likes its interesting semi-sweet flavor and I like its serious nutrition profile (I also think it tastes really good).  Just one tablespoon of blackstrap molasses provides (on average) the following nutrients: iron (20% RDA), manganese (21%), copper (21%), calcium (18%), potassium (15%), magnesium (11%), vitamin B6 (7%) and selenium (5%).  This is good for anyone and particularly good for growing children, pregnant and nursing women.   So trade sugar crashes for a healthy, energizing whole food and enjoy!

Molasses Milk

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Blackstrap molasses (or to taste)

Directions:

  • Pour milk into a cup
  • Add molasses and stir until dissolved.
  • Optional – Molasses milk can be heated for a delicious hot beverage.  Drink up!

Notes:

  • Types of molasses – there are several types of molasses and their nutrient contents vary widely.  Blackstrap molasses is the thickest, darkest and most flavorful.  It’s also by far the most nutritious.  I stick to blackstrap molasses for its superior health benefits and try to find an unsulphured brand if possible (less chemical residue).  You can find blackstrap molasses in almost any health food store as well as some normal grocery stores.
  • Optional extras – I love this drink all by itself.  However it also tastes good with some extras such as ½ teaspoon vanilla, a squirt of chocolate sauce or cocoa, a splash of coffee or a few drops of peppermint extract.
  • Container – molasses can be really annoying to pour or scoop.  It always seems to drip down the sides and cause a sticky mess.  I solved this problem by transferring my molasses to a squeezable honey container (cleaned and dried).  I don’t know why they don’t sell it this way!

    I just made warm molasses milk with a touch of vanilla and it’s delicious — like the old fashioned molasses Halloween candies that I haven’t seen in years! Thanks for the idea!

    I have been taking molasses for a month. I suffer with menorrhagia and became very anemic. Molasses drink have boosted my iron and stopped the bleeding . I was told by my doctor to have a blood transfusion but i refused. So I know it’s depressing when you are bleeding heavy. I put 1 tablespoon of molasses in a cup and put a bit of hot water just to dissolve it and then fill either with hot water or cold milk or hot , whichever you want. It’s really yummy.
