How to make powdered sugar

Powdered sugar is not something we keep on hand in the Hubbard kitchen.  But every so often I make whipped cream or icing and powdered sugar is perfect for that nice smooth texture.  The last time I needed some I really didn’t feel like running to the store so I decided to figure out how to make it myself instead.  And wow – it couldn’t be any easier.  Just toss some sugar in your blender, process on high and voila – you just made homemade powdered sugar!  The homemade version is cheap, easy and can be customized in ways you could never find at the grocery store.  You can use organic sugar, flavored sugars such as vanilla or cinnamon, add food coloring for a colored sugar or try unrefined alternatives like sucanat or rapadura.  You’ll never need to buy powdered sugar again!

How to make powdered sugar

  • 1 cup sugar
  • Optional: 1 Tablespoon cornstarch (helps reduce caking if you’re not gonna use your sugar immediately)

  • Pour the sugar and optional corn starch into your blender.   Blend on high until nice and powdery.  This may take several minutes depending on the strength of your blender.
  • Store in an airtight container.  That’s it!
