Homemade Animal Crackers

Homemade Animal Crackers

I’ve never met a kid that doesn’t like animal crackers and this homemade version is particularly tasty.  They’re sort of a mix between a traditional animal cracker and a sugar cookie, yum!  And they get extra fun points because you can customize the shapes any way you choose.  Online vendors like carry a decent selection of mini cookie cutters – animals, cars, flowers, bugs…  They’re great for parties, holidays and your kid will love them any time!

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • Mix the flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in a medium size bowl.  Set aside.
  • Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to beat butter on medium speed for 1-2 minutes.
  • Reduce speed to low, add sugar and beat until mixed through.
  • Add egg and vanilla and beat for one more minute.
  • Add the flour mixture about a cup at a time and beat on low until all of the flour is incorporated and the dough pulls away from the sides, about 2 minutes.
  • Roll out the dough to between 1/4 and 1/8 inch thick.  Use cookie cutters to cut desired shapes.
  • Place the crackers on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes until the crackers are starting to turn golden around the edges.
  • Cool and enjoy!
