How to Make a Grow Light

How to Make a Grow Light

Last year I started my first full scale garden and decided to start most of my plants from seed.  The entire process was a learning experience and one of the very first things I learned is that our house does not get enough sun.  We face south (which is good for plants) but we’re nestled into the trees which creates a ot of shade.  Seedlings need at least 8 hours of strong sunshine in order to thrive.  I had no idea how to make a grow light so I originally planned on buying one retail.  But the $100+ price tag motivated me to do a little research and I’m glad I did.  This is one of the simplest projects I’ve made and it cost less than 1/3 of the store bought equivalent.  Here it goes:

Grow light instructions

Supplies:

Directions:

  • Screw the fluorescent bulbs into your light fixture
  • Screw your hooks into the ceiling
  • Attach the chain to the light fixture and hang from the hooks at your desired height
  • Place seed trays beneath the light fixture, seedlings should be within 2-3 inches of the light
